Birmingham City Council have recently been equipping community groups with litter-picking tools, and so volunteers from Acocks Green Village in Bloom took advantage of the offer. Ashley Atterbury the Assistant Service Manager from the Fleet & Waste at Montgomery Street came out to deliver the tools recently including litter-picking sticks, a first aid kit, broom and bag hoops. More ways to keep the Village looking clean and tidy.

A couple of local families got in touch with Fran the Village in Bloom co-Ordinator about being Litter Champions and so Fran has supplied them with equipment to keep their streets clean. Its great to see young people getting involved in their local community and setting such a good example.  If you would like to be a litter-picking champion or want to help Village in Bloom in other ways then do get in touch via this website or with Fran directly: fran.lee47@yahoo.co.uk

Well done to the dedicated team of volunteers who have worked hard all year to make the village look lovely with freshly sanded and varnished benches, colourful planters, community projects, amazing flower beds and so much more. The judges were again impressed by the variety of improvements and community engagements the team had achieved. This is an excerpt from the RHS judges comments:

The team do an outstanding job with tremendous support from local residents, schools, businesses (large and small!) Community groups and Birmingham City Council. With events and initiatives throughout the year the Bloom campaign makes a real difference with everyone pulling together to brighten up the Village.

Just a few photos that highlight some of the work achieved over the summer. Hover over the photos to read more about the work.

Colourful Springtime in Acocks Green

Back in November the Village in Bloom Team, along with other volunteers, took part in a community bulb planting morning. Little did we know then what the future would hold. But amidst the upsetting turn of events and change of life as we know it.. the tulips and spring flowers have come through and lift the spirit of people passing through and walking through the village.
The completed Triabout with its colourful shrubbery and circular raised bed is a mass of colour with the beautiful variety of tulips. And last month daffodils brightened up the entrance into Birmingham.

Village in Bloom Awarded Gold Again!

Each year the gardening volunteers in the village work hard to make Acocks Green look its best. They want the local community centre to look good for everyone who lives and works here. Each year Acocks Green Village is also entered into the Urban Category of the
Royal Horticultural Society’s Nationwide ‘In Bloom’ gardening campaign.

Last year, because of Covid, there was no Village in Bloom, although the volunteers, led so well by co-ordinator Fran Lee, continued to keep on top of the gardening activities where possible, given the restrictions.

This year the event was resumed, but rather than the judges coming around in person to inspect the village, a portfolio of all the work that has taken place over the last year or so was put together to show the great work the team achieve. In the last week the news came through that the judges awarded the Village the top achievement for the 6th year – GOLD!

Here is a quote from the judges detailed marketing sheet:

A very well done for maintaining Gold standard despite the challenges of the pandemic! Fran and the Village in Bloom team are not afraid of a challenge or a little hard work.

Congratulations to all the volunteers, and thank you for making the village look so colourful and attractive. You can follow all the work that the team have done over the years on the Village in Bloom page.

The team will be looking for people to help plant bulbs in the autumn, so If you would like to become a regular volunteer or just help out from time-to-time, then contact Fran Lee (contact details on the Village in Bloom page)
